The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts has been recognized by the Catalogue for Philanthropy as “one of the best small charities in the Washington region,” The organization's work on behalf of traditionally marginalized youth and adults has earned our Directors the prestigious 2003 Linowes Leadership Award recognizing D.C.'s “unsung heroes working to improve communities”; recognition as one of the 50 “top arts-and humanities-based programs in the country serving youth beyond the school hours” by its selection as a 2007 Coming Up Taller Semifinalist by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities and its partner agencies, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Endowment for the Arts, and National Endowment for the Humanities; and selection as a 2007 Finalist for the Mayor's Arts Award for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education. Our work is focused on the arts, education and community outreach.

More than 9,000 students, ranging in age from 6 to 99, have received training in one or more of the 700 classes, institutes or outreach programs offered by TTL since its inception in 1992.  Through its Life Stories outreach program, TTL has served more than 750 incarcerated teens, severely at-risk youth, elderly residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities, and people living with HIV/AIDS since 2000.

In addition to its core curriculum of over 50 classes, The Theatre Lab provides groundbreaking educational outreach services to the traditionally underserved populations of seniors, incarcerated and at-risk youth, and people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as a full array of youth programming, including after school programs and summer camps for kids and teens.

Believing that all community members, regardless of socio-economic circumstance, deserve access to quality dramatic arts training, The Theatre Lab will award $38,000 in this year’s need based scholarships and work study assistance to individuals who could not otherwise afford to participate in The Theatre Lab’s offerings.
